Communication in Ethiopia

Ethiopia is full of languages—over 80! But don’t worry, you’ll get by just fine. Amharic is the official language and widely spoken in cities. English is also used, especially by younger people and in hotels or tourist spots. In the Oromia region, people speak Afaan Oromo. Tigrinya is common in the north.

If you learn a few words in Amharic, people really appreciate it. Simple phrases like “Selam” (Hello) or “Amesegenallo” (Thank you) can bring big smiles.

Ethiopians love storytelling. Don’t be in a rush—people enjoy chatting before getting to the point. You might be asked about your family, your home, or even what you ate—it’s just their way of showing care.

Body language matters too. Ethiopians are warm, but personal space is respected. You’ll notice friends walking hand-in-hand or arm-in-arm—that’s a sign of closeness, and it’s common even among men.
